デザイナー紹介:ユーゴ・グリッカー

手がけたのはユーゴ・グリッカー(Hugo Grygkar)146年から1959年に亡くなるまでの間に、実に100点以上のカレをデザインしたエルメスの重要な作家です。歴史的な版画や風刺画などから着想を得るスタイルを得意とし、緻密な縁飾りをまず描いてから中央のモチーフを配置するという独自の手法で知られています。

誕生のきっかけは、皇帝の式典用馬勒

「ブリッド・ドゥ・ガラ」の題材となったのは、メキシコ皇帝マクシミリアンからの注文で作られたと伝わる、贅を尽くした式典用の馬勒(ばろく)。この馬勒は「エミール・エルメス・コレクション」に実際に保管されているオブジェで、カレの生みの親であるロベール・デュマが二つを向かい合わせに配置したところ、完璧な構図が生まれ、そのままグリッカーの手でデザインに起こされました。

1957年の発売以来、世界で最も売れたスカーフのデザインとしてギネスブックにも掲載されるほどの人気を誇り、70種類以上のカラーバリエーションで再販され続けているエルメスを代表するアイコンです。

【1957】Hugo Grygkar’s “Brides de Gala” — The Story of the Horse Bridle That Made Hermès Famous Around the World

Today, we are pleased to introduce “Brides de Gala,” one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable designs in the history of the Hermès Carré.

This particular piece is presented in the Gavroche size (40 cm), also known as the Petit Carré 40, in a beautiful yellow colorway.

About the Designer: Hugo Grygkar

The design was created by Hugo Grygkar, one of the most important artists in the history of the Hermès Carré.

From the 1940s until his death in 1959, Grygkar designed more than 100 Carrés for Hermès. He was particularly known for drawing inspiration from historical engravings, illustrations, and satirical prints.

His distinctive creative process often began with meticulously drawing the elaborate border before carefully arranging the central motif within it—a technique that contributed greatly to the sophisticated composition of his Carrés.

Inspired by a Ceremonial Horse Bridle for an Emperor

The inspiration for “Brides de Gala” came from an exceptionally elaborate ceremonial horse bridle, reportedly commissioned by Emperor Maximilian of Mexico.

The original bridle is preserved today as part of the Émile Hermès Collection, the remarkable collection of historical objects belonging to the Hermès heritage.

Robert Dumas, one of the key figures behind the development of the Hermès Carré, placed two bridles facing one another. The resulting composition was so perfectly balanced that it became the inspiration for Grygkar’s now-famous design.

Since its introduction in 1957, “Brides de Gala” has become one of the most successful scarf designs in the world. Its extraordinary popularity has led to its continued reissue in more than 70 different colorways, making it one of the defining icons of Hermès.
