【2018年】ヴィルジニー・ジャマン作「デッラ・カヴァッレリア・ファヴォローザ」― 17世紀の馬術書から生まれた空想の生き物たち

いつもCARRÉ de GORILLA GORILLA(カレドゴリラゴリラ)をご覧いただきありがとうございます。 本日ご紹介する未使用のカレ90「デッラ・カヴァッレリア・ファヴォローザ(Della Cavalleria Favolosa)」(Della Cavalleria Favolosa)」は、エルメスのカレの中でも異色の遊び心が詰まった一枚です。

デザイナー紹介:ヴィルジニー・ジャマン

手がけたのはヴィルジニー・ジャマン(Virginie Jamin)。エミール・エルメス・コレクションに収められた歴史的な資料から着想を得て、独自のユーモアで再構成するスタイルを得意とするデザイナーです。

元ネタは17世紀の馬術書

モチーフの由来は、17世紀初頭にバイエルンで出版された、馬術史上もっとも重要とされる書物の一つ、ゲオルク・エンゲルハルト・フォン・レーンアイゼン著の馬術書。この書物はエミール・エルメス・コレクションに実際に保管されており、バロック調の版画で彩られたドイツのそりや、贅を尽くして飾られた馬たちが描かれています。

ヴィルジニー・ジャマンはこの版画をもとに、馬とキメラ(空想上の合成獣)の身体を組み合わせるという大胆な遊びを展開。2018年のオリジナル発表時には「遊び」がテーマのシーズンだったこともあり、ラケットやヨーヨー、ディアボロを手にした空想の生き物たちが登場する、ユーモアたっぷりのデザインに仕上がっています。2020年にはリバーシブル仕様の「ダブルフェイス」版も登場しました。

一枚で二度楽しめる、遊び心の効いた逸品

歴史的な馬術書という重厚なテーマを、軽やかなユーモアに変換してしまうところがエルメスらしい発想力。真面目な顔をしつつ、よく見るとクスッと笑えるモチーフが散りばめられた、会話のきっかけにもなる一枚です。

【2018】Virginie Jamin’s “Della Cavalleria Favolosa” — Fantastical Creatures Inspired by a 17th-Century Equestrian Book

Today, we are pleased to introduce this unused Hermès Carré 90, “Della Cavalleria Favolosa,” a wonderfully unconventional design filled with the playful spirit and imagination that make Hermès Carrés so captivating.

About the Designer: Virginie Jamin

The design was created by Virginie Jamin, a designer known for taking inspiration from historical materials preserved in the Émile Hermès Collection and reinterpreting them with her own distinctive sense of humor.

Her work often transforms fascinating historical references into imaginative and unexpected designs.

Inspired by a 17th-Century Equestrian Book

The inspiration for this Carré comes from an important work in the history of horsemanship: an equestrian book by Georg Engelhard von Löhneysen, published in Bavaria in the early 17th century.

The book is preserved in the Émile Hermès Collection and features richly detailed Baroque engravings, including elaborate German sleighs and magnificently decorated horses.

Using these historical engravings as her starting point, Virginie Jamin introduced a wonderfully playful twist, combining the bodies of horses and chimeras—fantastical creatures made from a combination of different animals.

The original design was released in 2018, during a Hermès season centered around the theme of “play.” It features fantastical creatures holding rackets, yo-yos, and diabolo toys, creating a whimsical world filled with humor and imagination.

In 2020, a reversible “Double Face” version was also introduced, offering another way to enjoy this playful design.

A Playful Carré Full of Surprise

There is something quintessentially Hermès about taking the weighty subject of a historic equestrian book and transforming it into something so lighthearted and imaginative.

At first glance, the design appears rich in historical detail. Look a little closer, however, and you will discover whimsical motifs that are sure to make you smile.
