【1987年】アニー・フェーヴル作「トラナ」― 仏教の聖地サーンチーの門が描くもう一つの物語

デザイナー紹介:アニー・フェーヴル

手がけたのはアニー・フェーヴル(Annie Faivre)。エルメスのカレを長年にわたり数多く手がけてきた、ハウスを代表するデザイナーの一人です。

モチーフはインド・サーンチーの仏塔の門

「トラナ」とは、古代インドで仏教の象徴として築かれた塚状の記念建造物「ストゥーパ(仏塔)」に後年付け加えられた、装飾豊かな門(トラナ)のこと。このデザインは、マウリヤ朝(紀元前324年〜紀元後187年)の時代に築かれた、インド・サーンチーの大塔を主なモチーフとしています。

門の彫刻やレリーフには、象・馬・獅子・孔雀・蓮の花、そして中央には仏教の教えを象徴する「法輪」が描かれています。さらにアニー・フェーヴルは遊び心を加え、豊穣と喜びを司るヒンドゥー教の象の頭を持つ神様、ガネーシャの姿もそっと忍ばせました。仏教とヒンドゥー教、二つの宗教的モチーフが一枚の中で共存する、奥行きのあるデザインです。

【1987】Annie Faivre’s “Torana” — Another Story Told by the Gateways of Sanchi, a Sacred Buddhist Site

Today, we are pleased to introduce “Torana,” a Petit Carré 40 in delicate chiffon, featuring a design first released in 1987 and rich in history and symbolism.

About the Designer: Annie Faivre

The design was created by Annie Faivre, one of the most celebrated designers in the history of the Hermès Carré.

Over the years, Faivre has created numerous Hermès Carrés, developing a distinctive visual language filled with intricate details, exotic imagery, and a sense of mystery.

Inspired by the Gateway of a Buddhist Stupa in Sanchi, India

A torana is an elaborately decorated gateway traditionally associated with a stupa, a mound-shaped monument built in ancient India as a sacred Buddhist structure.

This design is primarily inspired by the Great Stupa at Sanchi in India, one of the most important surviving monuments of ancient Buddhist art.

The gateways are richly decorated with carvings and reliefs depicting elephants, horses, lions, peacocks, lotus flowers, and, at the center, the Dharma Wheel, a symbol representing the teachings of Buddhism.

Annie Faivre adds her own playful touch by subtly incorporating Ganesha, the Hindu deity with an elephant head, traditionally associated with prosperity and joy.

The coexistence of Buddhist and Hindu imagery within a single design gives this Carré a remarkable sense of depth, bringing together two traditions of Indian religious art in an imaginative composition.
