Day 14:【1976年】ジュリー・アバティ作「コーチング」― 馬具工房エルメスの原風景

手がけたのはジュリー・アバティ(Julie Abadie)。馬具や乗馬文化をモチーフにした作品を数多く手がけるデザイナーです。
馬に着せる一式が、そのままデザインに
「コーチング」は、馬を馬車につなぐための様々な装備を描いたデザイン。背景には、幅広のウールの組紐で縁取られた毛布のような柄が広がり、右下と左上には運動やレースの後に馬の体を冷やさないようかける「ドレスシート」と呼ばれる馬着が描かれています。17世紀、馬車(コーチ)は御者が操る堂々とした乗り物として、乗客や荷物を運ぶ重要な存在でした。
馬具工房として創業したエルメスならではの、実用の道具への深い愛情が感じられる一枚です。

Day 14: 【1976】Julie Abadie’s “Coaching” — A Glimpse into Hermès’ Origins as a Saddlery Workshop

Today, we are pleased to introduce “Coaching,” a design first released in 1976 that captures one of the very foundations of Hermès: the art of saddlery and the world of equestrian craftsmanship.
About the Designer: Julie Abadie
“Coaching” was created by Julie Abadie, a designer who has produced numerous works inspired by saddlery, horses, and equestrian culture.
Her designs beautifully capture the tools and traditions of the equestrian world, transforming practical objects into elegant works of art.
An Entire Set of Horse Tack, Transformed into a Carré
“Coaching” depicts the various pieces of equipment used to harness a horse to a carriage.
Across the background stretches a pattern reminiscent of a horse blanket, edged with broad woolen braiding. In the lower right and upper left corners are dress sheets, horse blankets traditionally draped over horses after exercise or racing to help keep their bodies warm as they cool down.
The word “coaching” itself evokes the world of horse-drawn coaches. In the 17th century, coaches became imposing vehicles driven by coachmen, playing an important role in transporting passengers and goods.
Rather than simply depicting horses and carriages, Abadie focuses on the equipment that made this world possible—the practical tools, materials, and craftsmanship behind the elegance.
A Carré That Reveals the Soul of Hermès
Founded as a harness and saddlery workshop, Hermès has always maintained a deep appreciation for the beauty of objects created for a practical purpose.
“Coaching” is a wonderful expression of that heritage: the functional tools of the equestrian world transformed into a sophisticated composition of silk.
It is a Carré that allows us to glimpse the world from which Hermès was born—the workshop, the horses, the craftsmanship, and the quiet beauty of things made to be used.
