手がけたのはオーストリア出身のデザイナー、クラウディア・シュトゥールホーファー=マイア(Claudia Stuhlhofer-Mayr)。神話的なモチーフを緻密に描くことを得意としています。

パンの笛(パンパイプ)が生まれた物語

モチーフとなったのは、ギリシャ神話に登場するアルカディアの妖精シリンクスの物語。牧神パンに言い寄られたシリンクスは、川の畔で葦に姿を変えて逃れます。パンはその葦を集めて笛(パンパイプ)を作り、今も物悲しい音色を響かせている、という言い伝えです。牧神パン、ニンフ、サテュロス、ケンタウロス、そしてエルメス神自身までもが、この一枚を取り囲むように描かれています。

一枚の中に神話の世界が凝縮された、物語性豊かなデザインです。

Day 16: 【1996】Claudia Stuhlhofer-Mayr’s “Musique des Dieux” — The Story of the Nymph Who Became a Reed

Today, we are pleased to introduce “Musique des Dieux” (Music of the Gods), a design first released in 1996 and inspired by the world of Greek mythology.

About the Designer: Claudia Stuhlhofer-Mayr

The design was created by Claudia Stuhlhofer-Mayr, an Austrian-born designer known for her intricate depictions of mythological subjects.

Her work brings legendary figures and ancient stories to life through remarkably detailed compositions.

The Story Behind the Birth of the Pan Flute

At the heart of Musique des Dieux is the story of Syrinx, a beautiful nymph from Arcadia in Greek mythology.

Pursued by Pan, the wild god of the mountains, forests, and shepherds, Syrinx fled to the banks of a river. To escape him, she was transformed into reeds.

When Pan discovered the reeds, he gathered them and fashioned them into a musical instrument—the pan flute, or panpipes.

According to the myth, the melancholy sound of the instrument became a lasting reminder of the nymph who had escaped into the reeds.

Around this central story, Stuhlhofer-Mayr brings together Pan, nymphs, satyrs, centaurs, and even Hermes himself, creating a richly populated mythological world across the silk.

In Musique des Dieux, an entire mythological landscape is condensed into a single composition.

Gods, mythical creatures, nature, music, and an ancient tale of pursuit and transformation intertwine across the silk, making this a particularly narrative and evocative Hermès Carré.
