Day 18: 【2003】Jean-Christophe Donnadieu’s “Turqueries en l’honneur de Mr et T” — Europe’s Fascination with the Ottoman World
Thank you, as always, for visiting CARRÉ de GORILLA GORILLA.
Today, we are pleased to introduce “Turqueries en l’honneur de Mr et T”, a design first released in 2003 that evokes the fascination with the exotic world of the Ottoman Empire that swept through Europe during the 18th century.
About the Designer: Jean-Christophe Donnadieu
The design was created by Jean-Christophe Donnadieu, a designer who spent time in Rome.
His experience there can be glimpsed within the composition itself: at the center of the Carré, a motif reminiscent of St. Peter’s Square is subtly incorporated into the design.
“Turquerie” — Europe’s 16th–18th Century Fascination with the Ottoman World
The French term “Turquerie” refers to the European fascination with Ottoman culture, art, fashion, and customs that flourished from the 16th through the 18th centuries.
This Carré recalls the elegant world of Jean-François de Troy, a French Rococo painter celebrated for his sophisticated scenes of aristocratic life.
Through its theatrical composition and refined depiction of an imagined exotic world, the design captures the allure that Ottoman-inspired culture held for European society at the time.
A Carré to Discover Through Both History and Art
Turqueries en l’honneur de Mr et T offers more than an image of an exotic world.
It is a design that can be appreciated from two perspectives: the history of Europe’s fascination with the Ottoman Empire and the history of European art.
Rich in cultural references and artistic detail, this is a Carré whose story becomes deeper the longer you look.
